London 2012 Olympic Velodrome


The London 2012 Olympic Velodrome track was designed by Ron Webb and his team with the aim of creating the world’s fastest cycling track. By tailoring the track geometry and setting the high ambient temperature and still environmental conditions inside the venue, record-breaking conditions could be engineered.

An Olympic supplier

As a supplier of timber and timber-based products (Olympic venues) to the London 2012 Games, Arnold Laver supplied 56 kilometres of Siberian pine for the track surface, sourced from certified legally-compliant, responsibly-managed forests.

The Velodrome track

The timber for the velodrome track weathered inside the venue for months prior to the Olympics, bedding it in and acclimatising it to the prevailing ambient indoor conditions.

The Siberian Pine, Pinus Sibirica, grows in the permafrost of Northern Russia. Straight growing, it is durable, malleable and, apart from some initial cross-grain shrinkage, it isn't prone to excessive movement.
