Transforming your home with wall panels is actually more achievable than you might think. Wall panelling is a brilliant feature to use in the home and can be created in a variety of styles and finishes, meaning it works in almost any interior scheme.

There are so many reasons you may want to fit wall panelling in your home. Not only is it beautiful, but it also has several practical features. Panelling can be used to conceal uneven or unattractive surfaces, and provides a highly durable wall covering for areas that experience high-traffic, such as hallways and staircases. It can also be used as a more attractive way of boxing in plumbing and electrical wires.

Types of panelling

There are many different types of panelling, and the type that you decide on will have a significant impact on the room, so it is important to think about the style you are aiming for, as well as the architectural period of the building and its interior. Tongue-and-groove panels are a particular style that create a more classic look that works in both traditional and contemporary interiors. This can also be ideal for bathrooms, as it features no horizontal edges in which water might collect. Alternatively, flat-plank panels provide a more rustic finish and are often used in more industrial designed spaces. The benefit of this type of panelling is that they are much easier to use as they require fewer calculations to fit and more simple fixing options. If you are seeking a lower budget option, you can also fix a series of panel frames directly to the wall to emulate a panelled look.

Plywood is a versatile building material made from thin layers, or ‘piles’, of wood veneer glued together. It is a very durable material that provides an excellent foundation for building, so it is used in a variety of projects. We stock one of the best ranges of quality Plywood panels in the UK, providing our customers with great choice and value for money. Plywood comes with a range of advantages including strength and durability. The cross-graining of the material also reduces the chances of the wood splitting when nailing at the edges, making it more resistant to warping, cracking, and twisting. Plywood is also less expensive than similar boards, making it an ideal construction planking material.

Developed originally as an alternative to plywood, chipboard is a soft wood type that is made up of various pressed materials. Chipboard can be made from reclaimed paper, sawdust or other ingredients. Chipboard can be used for furniture or other retail products. At Arnold Laver, our knowledge and experience with chipboard panels is second to none. We have large stocks of all key chipboard products that are available in merchant and furniture grade.

MDF stands for medium-density fibreboard and is a man-made wood product used in place of solid wood. It came on the market in the 1980s and is made by combining wood particles with a resin or wax binder. MDF is often used for cabinets or other interior applications due to its inability to resist moisture.
